The Mississippi Pub – the Inver Grove Heights bar and restaurant that sits on the banks of the Mississippi River, has the 11th best patio in the Twin Cities according to the Pioneer Press Best Patios for 2016 Readers’ List. Readers voted this spring and the results were published in late May.
The Pioneer Press said this: “We asked readers to nominate their favorite restaurant patio and then put the top contenders to a vote. Here are the top 2016 patio picks from readers.”
The Mississippi Pub patio is a popular summertime hangout in Inver Grove Heights – and it should be. It’s a favorite for boaters cruising up and down the Mississippi River and for people who want to sit outside and soak in the scenery. Sure, it’s the Mississippi River, and sure there is a refinery on the other side, but that’s part of the appeal and what makes the Pub unique. The Pub patio is the best patio in Inver Grove Heights, enhanced by the Pub’s laid back atmosphere that is welcoming for anybody, whether you are a biker (motorcycle or pedal bike for that matter, the Minnesota Regional Trail is nearby), beer drinker, softball player, out for girls’ night or simply out with friends or family for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Pub features weekly music on the patio, happy hour specials and a variety of pub fare, appetizers, wings, burgers, sandwiches, entrees and daily food and drink specials. Its motto is “where the river meets great food and friendly people.”
No other Inver Grove Heights patio was named to the list, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some nice outdoor patio options in IGH. Below we look at some of the other patio and outdoor dining and drinking options in Inver Grove Heights:
Overboard Bar and Grill: A must stop when leaving or heading to the Pub, the Overboard Bar and Grill provides a nice “deck” wrapped around the bar. This is also a popular spot for boaters, but is also welcoming for anyone looking for a laid back place to have a drink and some food while sitting outside near the river.
Jersey’s Bar and Grill: The patio at Jbar is small because of space restrictions, but nicely built and well-designed. It’s actually the most aesthetically pleasing patio in the city. The fireplace is a nice touch, especially in the fall, and many, many connections have been made or extended on the patio at Jersey’s Bar and Grill.
B52 Burgers and Brew: B52 has a nice-sized patio that is often filled with some of the city’s best smokers. Actually, the smokers hover over the entrance to the patio, making it a bit congested for non-smoker trying to get through. The patio is nice-sized but just seems plain. Ordinary. Like it’s there because it can be, but it’s not one that stands out as a place to go if eating outside is a priority.
Drkula’s: This patio is all or nothing. If there’s volleyball or a bean bag tournament, it’s busy and packed, and a lot of fun. But if you drive by during happy hour or early evening midweek during the summer, it’s empty and sometimes not even open. It’s going to be rocking tonight though (Friday, June 10, 2016), as Muss and K102 are in town putting on a party on a patio from 3-7 p.m.
Old World Pizza: OWP has a nice sized patio that also isn’t used much, probably because it’s hard to get to that buffet when sitting outside.
Dairy Queen: The patio is prime seating from 3-8 p.m. during the summer time. Dairy Queen is packed and people love to sit on the patio and people watch while sitting on Cahill. Best non-bar patio in the city.
J’s Fish and Chicken: They put out chairs and tables for those who want to eat on the spot when picking up their order. Don’t knock it if it’s not for you – they are trying to make the most of the space they have.
A&W Restaurant: Coney’s cones and cruise night. This place is packed on Tuesday nights for the summer cruise night, featuring classic cars and ice cream and coney specials. Relaxing spot to have a burger and onion rings, root beer float or ice cream cone.
Caribou Coffee: Caribou provides a few seats outside at both IGH locations. Not bad places to sit for the coffee lover.
In addition to the readers’ list, Pioneer Press writers also created their Best of Twin Cities Patios for 2016 list. According to that article, Pioneer Press writers “searched Twin Cities’ patios and discovered 45 great ones that offer plenty of variety, from those with a casual, neighborhood vibe to high-voltage spots with eclectic people-watching. These patios are also noteworthy for their reliable food and service.”
The best patio on the writer’s list was ACQUA, in White Bear Lake. The best patio on the readers’ list was Charlie’s Irish Pub in Stillwater.
