The best-selling beers at Inver Grove Heights bars and restaurants

Beer. Inver Grove Heights residents like drinking beer. Lots of beer.

But have you ever wondered what the most popular beers are at some of the most popular bars and restaurants in Inver Grove Heights?

It seems like a simple answer, right? But…is it? We checked with B52 Burgers and Brew, Celts Pub, Overboard Bar and Grill, Jerseys Bar and Grill, The Mississippi Pub, and Arbor Pointe Liquors to find out what domestic and craft beers people are buying, and what trends have emerged at these popular IGH bars and restaurants. We also asked what the top selling alcohol was at each bar/restaurant.

Craft beer explosion comes to IGH

With interest in craft beer exploding, many new beers have entered the market, and new favorites have emerged. Beer drinkers are also more open to exploring the many new options now available.

“Craft beers have taken precedence over domestics,” said Melissa Harms, of The Mississippi Pub. “We see more women drinking beer. There is also more willingness among consumers to try different beers.”

The top three selling craft beers at The Pub are Insight Trollway Citrus IPA, Castle Danger Cream Ale, and Summit EPA. The top three selling domestic beers are Coors Light, Michelob Golden Light, and Miller Lite.

One of the top selling craft beers in Inver Grove Heights – and a favorite of many, is the 21st Amendment Brewery Brew Free! or Die Blood Orange IPA.

“The blood orange flavor reduces the flavor of the hops and makes it easier to drink for those who don’t enjoy the hoppyness of most IPAs,” said Ronnie Fischer, General Manager of Celts Pub. Celts also just added Boulder Beer Shake Chocolate Porter to its outstanding craft beer lineup, and with the fall and cooler weather upon us, the popularity of this beer should increase, said Fischer.

Note: The image at the top of the page with this story shows the great craft beer selection at Celts Pub in IGH.

The top selling domestic beers at Celts are Coors Light, Pabst, and either Miller Lite or Busch Light.

“We’ve seen a large growth in Busch Light sales,” said Fischer. “Pabst is always a popular seller with the older crowd, especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.”

Busch Light is only available in bottles at Celts, while Miller Lite is on tap and in bottles, so over time, more Miller Lite is usually sold.

Popular domestic beers still sell well

Over time though, locals do like to try craft beer, but eventually go back to their favorites for the long haul, said Todd Brown, owner of Overboard Bar and Grill.

“People love trying the new craft beer, but I see them going back to what they normally drink,” said Brown.

The top selling craft beers at Overboard are Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA, Fulton Sweet Child of Vine, and Sam Adams OctoberFest. The top three selling domestic beers at Overboard are Coors Light, Busch Light, and Michelob Golden Light.

Deschutes Brewery Fresh Squeezed IPA is also the top selling craft beer at Jersey’s Bar and Grill. In addition to a willingness to try new and different beers, the growth in craft beer can also be credited to the fact that the younger generation of beer drinkers doesn’t want to drink the same beer as their parents, said Bill Ashton, owner of Jersey’s Bar and Grill. That being said, the top three domestic beers at Jersey’s are Coors Light, Michelob Golden Light, and Miller Lite – which are popular with beer drinkers of all ages.

Mike McMahon, co-owner and General Manager at B52 Burgers and Brew, is responsible for inventory and ordering beer and alcohol for the popular IGH bar/restaurant. The top three selling domestic beers at B52 are Michelob Golden Light, Coors Light, and Bud Light.

As for craft beer at B52, there is one clear cut favorite.

“We offer a lot of interesting rotating craft beers, but the most consistent, top seller is Alaskan Amber from Alaskan Brewing Company in Juneau, Alaska,” said McMahon. “We consistently sell record numbers.”

No surprise: Vodka top-selling alcohol

In terms of alcohol, to no one’s surprise, vodka is the top selling alcohol at every bar/restaurant in IGH that we reached out to. But others emerge pending on time of season.

“This time of year, we really pump through the vodka,” said McMahon. “We sell a huge number of Bloody Mary’s, and Moscow Mules are incredibly popular these days as well. As it gets colder we will really see an increase in whiskeys, bourbons, and scotches.”

There are a lot of great places to try a growing list of great tasting beers in Inver Grove Heights. Be sure to check out these beers, and more, when visiting any of your favorite IGH drinking establishments. But when doing so, be sure to arrange a safe ride home. Drinking and trying new beers is always fun. But drinking and driving is dumb. Don’t be dumb. Don’t drink and drive.
