With its reclining leather seats and stadium-style seating, the AMC Theatre in Inver Grove Heights is arguably the best movie theatre in Minnesota. There are a lot of nice theatres in the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota, and while readers are sure to have their favorites, including those with a more “historic” theatre presence, we are just going to say that for once, Inver Grove Heights has something that stands above the rest of the crowd:
That’s the AMC Theatre in Inver Grove Heights.
And now, what we feel is the best theatre in Minnesota, officially named AMC Inver Grove 16, added another element to make it stand out.
MacGuffins Bar is now open and moviegoers (21 and over) can get an ice cold beer, mixed drink or glass of wine at the theatre. This is the latest and final addition to what was a “$7 million renovation that included power recliners in all auditoriums, upgraded screens, sound systems, speakers and restrooms,” according to this Pioneer Press article from June.
“Everything is complete there,” said Ryan Noonan, Director of Communications for AMC Movie Theatres, referring to the final stages of the IGH AMC Theatre remodel. “The renovations are complete, including the opening of MacGuffins Bar.”
While we did not see a price list for beer, drinks or wine, one report said a cost of a 16 ounce beer is $10. While these prices rival the high prices of beer, alcohol or wine at a Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins or Minnesota Wild game, it should be no surprise since the cost of soda, popcorn and candy is high at any movie theatre. Two large sodas and a large popcorn cost nearly $15 – but come with unlimited refills. No unlimited refills on beer here (or anywhere else for that matter).
The theatre also now sells pizza, chicken tenders and mozarella sticks in addition to traditional movie theatre food (popcorn, candy, nachos). While other AMC Theatre’s feature a full dine-in menu, the Inver Grove Heights AMC Theatre was never intended to be a full restaurant, Noonan said.
But we’re not complaining. The renovations at the IGH AMC Theatre are fantastic. And since nearly everyone has seen the new Star Wars movie, they’ve likely been to the IGH AMC Theatre and checked out MacGuffins Bar – or at least walked by it curious about what it offered. In fact, one Facebook post said this when they found out they could buy beer at the movie theater:
“Everything I now need is at the movie theatre. Movies, popcorn and beer. Life is good.”
Here’s a tip: No matter how old you are, and how old you think you look – bring your ID if you want to get a beer, mixed drink or glass of wine. They card everyone at MacGuffins Bar. If you are 81 years old, but feeling 61, you are still going to get carded. So spread the word that you need an ID to get served. And don’t expect MacGuffins to be open for that 10:15 a.m. movie. We were there last week and it looked like they were just about to open up after 4:30 p.m. Call the theatre at 651-453-1916 to get specific times the bar may open.
Inver Grove Heights may not stake claim to the best restaurants in the Twin Cities, but it can claim it has the best movie theatre in the Twin Cities. Next time you are there, check out MacGuffins Bar and let us know what you think.
