Where do people get this information? And how do such bad rumors get started? And why do they get started?
Last week there was a Facebook post in the popular Inver Grove Heights Neighborhood chat group saying Arby’s is coming to Inver Grove Heights, opening in the old KFC location at 3220 South St W., on the north end of Inver Grove Heights, bordering South Saint Paul and located next to a bustling McDonald’s restaurant.
Well, that is just not true, and is another bad rumor spread on social media, just like the bad rumor that the IGH Walmart was expanding to a full grocery store.
The KFC building, which was once for sale for $400,000, was purchased in 2014 by a company called Inver Grove BBQ LLC. That business is located in Blaine. And while there is limited information available on Inver Grove BBQ LLC (and don’t start thinking just because this company owns the building a BBQ restaurant is coming to this location either), Eat IGH has learned three things:
1. All Arby’s locations in Minnesota are corporate owned, versus franchises. A spokesperson from Arby’s corporate told Eat IGH there are no plans to open an Arby’s in Inver Grove Heights at this time. It doesn’t mean it will never happen, just not now, and not in the KFC location. The decision to open a new restaurant in Minnesota is made solely by the corporate office. While other states have franchisees who own Arby’s it’s all corporate in Minnesota. So what does it take to become an Arby’s franchisee (in another state)? Arby’s requires a minimum of $500,000 in liquidity and $1.5 million in net worth. Operationally, a franchisee must also have 5 years restaurant management or ownership and be able to open a minimum of three stores. This proves just how much money it takes to open up a restaurant franchise.
2. There has been no application by Arby’s, to the city of Inver Grove Heights, to open a restaurant. Which makes sense, because there was never any intention of Arby’s opening in IGH, and in the old KFC building.
3. Another source confirmed with EatIGH that while there isn’t restaurant development interest in that old location, SuperAmerica is actually trying to purchase the building to expand the adjacent River Valley Cooperative gas station and convenience store, located at 3240 57th Street E Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota 55076. River Valley is owned by SuperAmerica, so expansion into the location where the old KFC is located would make sense.
So no, Arby’s is not coming to Inver Grove Heights in the old KFC location, and Arby’s is also not coming to IGH anytime soon. That’s a corporate decision. And another bad social media rumor at that.
