But variety is the spice of life and in the case of pizza, variety is the slice of life. That’s why even the most dedicated and diehard Old World Pizza fan will tell you they need to eat other pizza from time-to-time.
And if you venture just outside the city, there are plenty of pizza places that are worth checking out. In fact, we recommend these five pizza places that are all within 5 miles of the Inver Grove Heights. Disclaimer: That distance will stretch pending on what part of IGH you are from, but these are all 5 miles from the IGH border nearest to each of these locations, and a short drive or round trip to each:
1. Dulono’s Pizza, Woodbury
Looking for an alternative to the Old World Pizza lunch buffet? Check out Dulono’s Pizza in Woodbury. Easy to overlook because it’s in a small strip of businesses in the “not as cool” part of Woodbury, Dulono’s is a hidden secret of the Woodbury restaurant scene. Located at 1850 Weir Drive, Woodbury, MN and just south of Keys Restaurant, the Dulono’s lunch buffet is $9.99 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday – Friday. If you like crispy thin crust pizza, this is the place to go. In fact, and take a deep breath here, the crust of this pizza is much crispier than the crust of the Old World Pizza buffet and the sauce will leave you heading to buffet again and again and again. In addition to a wide variety of pizzas the buffet also comes with hoagie sandwiches (cut in small portions for easy sampling), daily pasta specials (the red sauce is a fantastic blend of sweet and spicy), a salad bar, dessert and a soda.
We found Dulono’s driving past it on our way to Keys Restaurant in Woodbury. Don’t drive past Dulono’s. Stop in and give it a try. You will be happy you did. Distance: “A good 5 miles” as they say, from the IGH border.
2. BLVD Bar and Grille, West Saint Paul
Located at 433 E. Mendota Road, West St. Paul, MN 55118, the BLVD Bar and Grille is a familiar bar/restaurant to many in Inver Grove Heights, South Saint Paul and West Saint Paul. The food at the BLVD is always good and the Buffalo wings are the best in the tri-city area of IGH/SSP/WSP. But don’t overlook the pizza at the BLVD. It’s not basic bar pizza. In fact, it’s better than any pizza restaurant in Inver Grove Heights, besides Old World Pizza. It’s easy to call in and pick up too. We recommend the Spicy Red, which comes with red sauce, pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, onions, mushrooms, crushed red peppers, mozzarella and a sprinkle of garlic seasoning. There’s also build-your-own pizzas, deep dish pizzas and flatbreads. Add the BLVD to your pizza hot spots – and call them at 651.450.7736 to order a pizza to-go next time you are looking for something different – and delicious. Distance: Less than a mile from the IGH border.
3. Solos Pizza Cafe, Eagan
Fast, fresh, made-to-order. Located at 1270 Promenade PL Eagan, MN 55121, this is a perfect hot spot for lunch or those looking for their own pizza, salad and a soda in a fast-casual environment. Solos Pizza Cafe is known for fresh ingredients with a unique menu that goes beyond the traditional pizza toppings and options. Try the White Hen – which comes with creamy white garlic sauce, grilled chicken, onion, tomato, fresh basil and oregano. Gluten free crust options are also available. These pizzas are cooked in the SOLOS convection oven, a high-tech, 21st Century marvel, designed specifically for cooking pizza perfectly, quickly and energy efficiently. It has an Inver Grove Heights connection too – the Solos Cafe business office is located in the Blackberry Office Park in IGH. Distance: About 4 miles from the southern border of IGH.
4. Angelo’s Pizza, South Saint Paul
Angelo’s Pizza is the Old World Pizza of South Saint Paul. What does that mean? It’s the best pizza in South Saint Paul and a place every Packer backer has been to on multiple occasions. Located at 1203 Southview Blvd, South St Paul, MN 55075, Angelo’s also features a variety of other Italian dishes such as spaghetti, lasagna, hoagies, salads and more. Angelo’s is a great alternative to Old World Pizza and a short drive for anyone in The Grove. Distance – about 2 miles from the IGH border.
5. Savoy Pizza, Newport
It’s no surprise Red Savoy’s Pizza would make this list. Located at 642 Hastings Ave, Newport, MN 55055, this is a take-out only location. While there are still hopes of a Red Savoy Pizza coming to Inver Grove Heights, it’s worth the 20 minute round trip drive to Newport to pick up a Savoy Pizza. With no traffic on the bridge, this is an easy drive to and from the Grove. They also have occasional lunch specials that include slices of pizza and soda ready to go. Distance 5 miles from the eastern IGH border.
